“I wanted small pancakes, Mamma!”

“I wanted them to look like chocolate pebbles.”

As she wiped chocolate sauce off her toddler’s face, she bluntly said, “Food can’t resemble pebbles, Shona. What will people say? She feeds her children stones!” She cracked jokes and laughed at them. She was her own audience. She wasn’t neglected, nor lonely. But was inching closer to something that her husband called “bitterness”. He was her companion and her voice of conscience too. He saw her worth regardless of success and failure. And although she had given up on her dreams, he hadn’t.

She used to be confident; someone who knew music as a journey. But having failed to make a name in the industry, over the years, she had started doubting her prowess.

So, on her 33^rd birthday, he gifted her closure. A chocolate brown saree and white roses. She looked at him in dismay for brown was her least liked colour.

“You’ve always told me that dark and gloomy colours are not for baithaks. I want to tell you that there’s no rulebook. Wear what you like. And sing your worries away. Mourn the past and move on.” Her baby chimed in saying, “We can have pebble-sized pancakes, no?”
